Kai Po Che!

Walking into the theater, I reminded myself not to let Amit Trivedi’s music raise my expectations for a film based on Chetan Bhagat’s The Three Mistakes of My Life—a novel I found unimpressive. However, Abhishek Kapoor’s adaptation, Kai Po Che, is a cinematic triumph that elevates the source material to a whole new level.
Set in middle-class Ahmedabad, the film feels authentic and heartfelt. Govind (Rajkummar Rao), Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput), and Omi (Amit Sadh) are relatable characters, each with distinct traits: the ambitious businessman, the passionate cricketer, and the loyal friend. Their friendship faces challenges, from natural disasters like the Gujarat earthquake to the Godhra riots, depicted with sensitivity and realism.
The performances are stellar. Rajkummar delivers a restrained yet powerful portrayal, Amit holds his ground in a subtle role, and debutant Sushant shines as the charismatic Ishaan, showcasing incredible screen presence and emotional depth. Amit Trivedi’s music, Hitesh Sonik’s background score, and Anay Goswami’s breathtaking cinematography elevate the film further.
Though not without minor flaws, Kai Po Che is an emotionally gripping and visually stunning experience. Kapoor’s growth as a filmmaker is evident, making this a must-watch for its compelling storytelling and brilliant execution. Rating: 3.5/5.
